We’ve moved!

After 14 years in a home with amazing views and an over-the-top, 3-bay auto workshop, Maggie and I have finally taken the plunge: we’ve moved into a 2,000‑square‑foot apartment in Scottsdale.

This move had been seriously contemplated and discussed for the past five years, but it came about very suddenly. For years, we believed we’d never get serious about downsizing until we actually took a step like this. So, Maggie diligently spent a day every two or three months visiting potential “next places” for us to live — lining up two CCRCs (Continuing Care Retirement Communities), checking out condos, and looking at smaller, interesting houses we could buy or rent. I’d occasionally tag along. Nothing really clicked until a weekend in early November. And here we are, less than a month later: moved in, and the big house (the best one we’ve ever lived in) is on the market.

So, why the sudden leap?

Beyond the practical reasons — wanting to downsize, experience the freedom of having less stuff, and shed the upkeep of a large home — what tipped the scales was a highly unusual, nearly one-of-a-kind apartment in Scottsdale. It’s in a brand‑new building (the first lease was in 2025) and fits us perfectly:

• It’s on the ground floor–visitors can park right outside our unit.
• We have a large, private, two‑car garage attached to our unit (it’s actually inside the building’s main parking garage).
• Three bedrooms: two large ones and a smaller one that Maggie can use as a studio.
• A small den just off the kitchen where I can set up my computer and office gear.
• Even though it’s a ground-floor unit, the ceilings in the living room and bedrooms are 16 feet high, with exposed air‑handling and electrical ductwork. It feels like a New York City loft.
• It easily accommodates my car and motorcycle addiction, so there’s no need to downsize vehicles immediately (though that is on the agenda). Any suggestions as to which should go first? The McLaren? Tesla Plaid? Slingshot?, or the BMW 1200GS?)
